Artist Statement
My practice is grounded in material and in what emerges through the interaction between hand, body, and space. It focuses on materiality, perception, and existential experiences of time and relationships. I work with wall-based and sculptural textile works, exploring relationships and contradictions in both material and theme, such as control and loss of control, presence and absence, softness and hardness.
Through repetition, pressure, and gradual transformation, I allow the materials to respond to light, movement, and their surroundings. Forms are combined, pressed forward, swell, or yield, while surfaces and structures evoke both resistance and curiosity.
My work is driven by material experimentation, with process at its core. It is through making, through the thinking hand, that the works take shape and narratives emerge.
Mia Hultgren (b.1985) is a textile artist with a degree from the Royal College of Art (MA Mixed Media Textiles) and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Design School (BA Textiles). She has exhibited in Sweden, Copenhagen, and London, and in addition to her artistic practice, she also works as an art educator.
